Horse riding craze has increased in our state in past one year and many youngsters who use to think of only cricket or tennis are now showing lot of interest in learning horse riding. Until now Horse riding clubs are present only at Hyderabad but now it is also available in our own ‘City of Destiny’ Vizag.

Vizag Zoo ParkApril 20, Vizag: The Indira Gandhi Zoological Park has emerged as the most popular tourist spot in the city by receiving more visitors in the just concluded year 2011-12 when compared to all other tourist spots.

According to reports, the zoo gained a whopping Rs.1.17 crore by receiving a record 7.052 lakh visitors in the year. Kailasagiri received nearly Rs.90 lakh while the submarine at RK beach earned around Rs.70 lakh revenue from visitors. Speaking to this correspondent, the zoo curator, Mr Ramalingam, felt that this was the result of collective efforts by all staff to attract more visitors, and the establishment of Meena Lokam, a giant fish aquarium with rare marine species.

Nine closed circuit cameras were also installed at all important points to check activities of visitors and theft in the zoo surroundings. “This year we are planning to bring zebras and set up a butterfly park,” the curator revealed.

The zoo has already tied up with the Assam-based National Zoological Park to procure more rare and exotic species including wild animals under the Exchange of Animals (EoA) programme.

The zoo generally sees visitors, particularly students and tourists in summer. Negotiations are on with zoos in other parts of the country and also those in the UAE, Abu Dhabi and South Africa for African cheetahs and Asiatic cheetahs. The zoo is also in the process of procuring a giraffe. (DC)

Most of the beaches at Vizag are very unsafe for swimmers due to strong ocean currents. So don't venture into waters for a swim. To get wet and play with water up to your knee is ok but thinking going further deep will be a invitation to danger. Many tourists, students have lost their lives here.

Mainly this picnic season many visitors, unaware of these dangers venture into these waters and lose their lives.

Every year around 30 people's lives are lost by venturing into these beach waters at Vizag.

Recent Beach Drowning:
Three students of Indian Maritime University (IMU), one from Rajasthan and the other two from Bihar, drowned at Yarada Beach a few days ago. They were part of a group of 19 students, who went to chill out at the picturesque Yarada Beach on November 7. An 11-member group of Intermediate final-year students went to celebrate ‘Friendship Day' at Rushikonda Beach last year. They played football on the beach after which 10 of them went for a swim. Five of them met a watery grave. Friendship Day will remain a nightmare for the survivors for the rest of their lives.

The trauma which the families of the victims undergo is unfathomable. It is not as though the travelers were unaware of the risks involved in playing with the waves. The blue waters of the sea and the golden sandy beaches are an irresistible attraction not only to tourists but also local people. The attraction proves fatal when they do not exercise adequate caution. The water depth and intensity of waves are unpredictable, and sometimes even playing in shallow water can be fatal.

Picnic season
Warning boards fail to deter travelers from getting into waist-deep water or even risking a swim against the tide. With the picnic season on, scores of people of all age groups throng the beaches in large numbers to spend a fun-filled day along with their friends and relatives.

Once they get into a playful mood, they forget the dangers involved and throw all caution to the wind. The presence of crowds on the beach sometimes gives them a ‘feeling of safety' that one person or the other would be an expert swimmer to save them in the event of any eventuality.

Scientists of the National Institute of Oceanography (NIO) have identified the presence of rip currents in and around Visakhapatnam, a few years ago, and have declared some parts of the beach ‘unsafe'. The only beach in the city that is said to be safe for swimming is the Lawson's Bay but unfortunately, this beach is a symbol of neglect with open defecation and unhygienic surroundings.

“The private players, who have taken possession of some of the beaches, should own responsibility for the safety of tourists and visitors who play at the beach under their jurisdiction. Modern technology like surveillance cameras can be used to check drowning deaths,” Police Commissioner J. Purnachandra Rao feels.

Friends, the very unsafe beaches are Ramakrishna Beach, Tenneti Park Beach, Rushikonda Beach and Yarada Beach. So be careful and don't venture into these beaches for a swim.

One in Five Indians have diabetes, high BP      Top
diabetesNov 09: One in every five Indian adults living in urban cities suffers not only from hypertension but also diabetes. In Maharashtra, more disturbingly, one in three persons is struck by the twin epidemic.

These are some of the highlights of India's largest clinic-based survey to assess the prevalence of diabetes and hypertension. The findings of the study, called Screening India's Twin Epidemic (SITE), were announced on Monday in Mumbai.

The overall health picture, the study suggests, is grim: 60%, or three out of every five Indians, have either diabetes or hypertension or both. The corresponding figure in Maharashtra, at 67%, is worse. In particular, almost 40% of those tested in the state had diabetes. And every second person had hypertension.

The only parameter where Maharashtra performed better than the all-India average was in the level of awareness: if 7% of those tested in the eight states put together didn't know they had these diseases, in Maharashtra it was 5%.

The SITE study, sponsored by a multinational pharmaceutical company, Sanofi, tested almost 16,000 people living in urban cities across eight states over the last three years. Patients walking into general practitioners' clinics for complaints other than diabetes and hypertension were tested.

"It is shocking that 60% of those we studied suffered from hypertension or diabetes or both," said Dr Shashank Joshi, the principal investigator for the SITE study. He further said that the total number of people suffering from either of the two diseases was almost as much as the number of people having both the diseases. "This only shows how uncontrolled the diseases are. People don't monitor their sugar or blood pressure regularly."

The study assessed people on three parameters: if their levels of glycated haemoglobin were under 7, if their blood pressure was less than 130/80 and their levels of bad cholesterol less than 100 mg/dl. Epidemics fed by obesity and non-vegetarianism

Study to find prevalence of diabetes & hypertension discovers 80% people had abdominal obesity

The study found that only 1.9% of those tested could achieve these standards," said Dr Joshi, with only 20% having controlled blood pressure levels.

The study was conducted in 800 clinics in urban hubs such as Mumbai, Pune and Nagpur in Maharashtra; New Delhi-NCR; Chennai, Coimbatore and Madurai in Tamil Nadu; Bangalore, Mangalore, and Mysore in Karnataka; Hyderabad, Vizag and Vijaywada in Andhra Pradesh; Bhopal and Indore in Madhya Pradesh; Ahmedabad, Surat and Vadodara in Gujarat; and Kolkata, Hoogly and Howrah in West Bengal.

The reason for the surging numbers is not hard to find: obesity. Almost 80% of the people studied had abdominal obesity or a waist circumference of over 90 cm. The study also found that one of the driving forces was the rising trend of non-vegetarianism along with the old cause of excess salt in diet. "We found that 61.5% of those interviewed were nonvegetarians," added Dr Joshi.

While the average American consumes 4 to 6 grams of salt a day, Dr Joshi said that Indians had almost 6 to 8 grams a day.

Dr Hemant Thacker, a consultant at Jaslok Hospital, blamed this on lifestyle changes. "There is a change in lifestyle, especially among the young. Instead of climbing stairs, we use elevators. We have become couch potatoes and like our drinks. We, however, don't exercise enough," he said.

The biggest challenge, said doctors, was the silent epidemic. The SITE study, for instance, found that 7.2% of those tested didn't know they had diabetes or hypertension. "Worse, 18.4% of those tested had a condition called pre-diabetes," said Dr Joshi.

Extrapolations from the recent ICMR study say that India has approximately 75 million people suffering from diabetes. But it is estimated that double that number have pre-diabetes. "For every person with diabetes, there are two who have elevated blood sugar levels that could result in diabetes a few years later," said Dr Joshi. (TOI)

Mobiles 'may cause brain cancer'

The World Health Organization's cancer research agency says mobile phones are "possibly carcinogenic".

A review of evidence suggests an increased risk of a malignant type of brain cancer cannot be ruled out. However, any link is not certain - they concluded that it was "not clearly established that it does cause cancer in humans".

A cancer charity said the evidence was too weak to draw strong conclusions from.

A group of 31 experts has been meeting in Lyon, France, to review human evidence coming from epidemiological studies.

They said they looked at all relevant human studies of people using mobile phones and exposure to electromagnetic fields in their workplace.

The WHO's International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC) can give mobile phones one of five scientific labels: carcinogenic, probably carcinogenic, possibly carcinogenic, not classifiable or not carcinogenic.

It concluded that mobiles should be rated as "possibly carcinogenic" because of a possible link with a type of brain cancer - glioma.

Ed Yong, head of health information at Cancer Research UK, said: "The WHO's verdict means that there is some evidence linking mobile phones to cancer but it is too weak to draw strong conclusions from.

"The vast majority of existing studies have not found a link between phones and cancer, and if such a link exists, it is unlikely to be a large one.

"The risk of brain cancer is similar in people who use mobile phones compared to those who don't, and rates of this cancer have not gone up in recent years despite a dramatic rise in phone use during the 1980s.

"However, not enough is known to totally rule out a risk, and there has been very little research on the long-term effects of using phones."

The WHO estimated that there are five billion mobile phone subscriptions globally.

Christopher Wild, director of the IARC, said: "Given the potential consequences for public health of this classification and findings it is important that additional research be conducted into the long term, heavy use of mobile phones.

"Pending the availability of such information, it is important to take pragmatic measures to reduce exposure such as hands free devices or texting." (Health reporter, BBC)

How to Raise and Take Care of a Betta Fish (Siamese fighting fish)
Betta Fish Jan 31, 2012: Betta splendens, also known as "Bettas" and "Siamese fighting fish", are popular pets recognized for their aggressiveness, interactiveness, and relatively low cost for maintenance and care. Betta fish can prove to be man's best friend for up to four years. Follow these tips to make sure your new pal has a happy and healthy life. They are not to be placed with other fish because of their extreme territorial behaviour. They don't take a lot of space. They also enjoy real plants in their habitats and it's also a very good accessory.

Bettas are one of the usual reasons of impulse buying and sudden giving in to the aquarium hobby. They are scientifically known as Betta splendens which is Latin for "Beautiful Warrior". Thanks to their brilliant coloration and long flowing fins, they are one of, if not the most recognized aquarium fish. It is common to people who just pass by the pet shop with no intention of buying a tank nor a fish in the first place and end up carrying a fish bowl kit with a Betta as they go home.

The beauty about Betta fish is that they don't need a large tank to survive, they can cope quite well in a small bowl without the requirement of filtration or aeration. Again, I would like to stress that A FISH BOWL IS NOT THE BEST HOME FOR ANY TYPE OF FISH. A larger tank with a filtration system would surely make a better home and a happier fish. Nevertheless, if a fish bowl is properly cared for and maintained well, a Betta fish will do just fine in such a small environment.

The Betta is also commonly known as the "Siamese Fighting Fish" because the males will always fight each other. You should never keep males together for this reason, but can keep a Betta with other gentle fishes if you have a large aquarium. In a fish bowl, however, it is best to keep a SINGLE Betta. Putting many fishes in a bowl means more waste, poorer water quality, and eventually a sick fish! Remember, a Betta fish will be happy being alone and will not get bored.

Bettas are tropical fishes. They thrive on temperatures between 24°C(75°F) and 30°C(86°F). Since you cannot equip a fish bowl with water heater, you should situate it where it's very warm and never put it in an air-conditioned room where the temperature can get exceedingly cold.

An interesting characteristic of the Betta fish is its capability to breathe surface air. It has a breathing organ called "labyrinth" which is somewhat similar to the human lungs. This is an important factor that allows the Betta fish to survive in a bowl without an air pump.

Another interesting trait of the Betta fish is its ability to recognize its "master". Once your Betta gets to know that you are the one feeding him, he'll flutter around happily when you approach. He'll show off his vibrant color, spreading his beautiful fins, and push against the glass of his bowl as if he wants to greet you. Well in fact he is actually begging for food but still, isn't that just lovely? Other fishes don't even know you're alive.

A funny thing about Betta fish is that when it is happy and healthy, it will continually create bubbles on the top of the water. No, the water is not dirty nor soapy! It is just his way of making a 'nest' when he is ready to spawn. It is where the male places the eggs of the female and continue to tend it until the eggs hatch.

Oh, and did I always call the Betta a 'he'? Yes! Those beautiful Betta fishes with long fins and vibrant colors you see in pet shops are males. The females are not as highly colored, and have much shorter fins. You can keep a female Betta too, if you wish. Both have the same requirements for keeping. But never keep a male and a female together in a small bowl. The male tends to be aggressive towards the female after some time. You can keep several females in a large aquarium. But, as I mentioned, keep only a SINGLE Betta in a fish bowl!

Some things to consider before buying a fish bowl as well as information on how to setup your fish bowl.

Bowl. The first important thing to consider is the size of the bowl. 1.5 to 2 gallons is best. If you do not have a whole lot of space, you can get at least 1/2 gallon. Anything less than that is not recommended. While it is true that most pet shop owners keep Bettas in very small containers such as plastic cups, this is a very cruel thing to do! We all want a happy, living fish, not just a mere 'survivor' fish! So please, buy him a decent sized bowl! Not only would it provide a wider space for the fish to swim around, it would also hold a larger volume of water to dissipate waste and, therefore, require easier maintenance.

Appropriate Home. It is best to situate the bowl where the temperature is 25°C(77°F), but the fish will do just fine in a wider temperature range of 24°C(75°F) to 30°C(86°F). Since you cannot equip a small bowl with water heater, keep it away from sources of hot or cold air such as direct sunlight, air-conditioners, heater vents, etc.

Decorations. You can have a plant (live or plastic) on the bowl. They do not only make the bowl look nicer but they also provide hiding places for the Betta, which is also a requirement for almost any type of fish. Live plants also reduce some wastes on the water. You should watch for rotting leaves, however. They need to be cut as they will pollute the water. A rock or two can be added as decor, and a broken clay pot (also a hiding place) provides interest to the fish. You can add gravel only after you learn to feed properly.

Equipments. Small, gentle filters are an option to help keep the water crystal clear, reduce waste, and therefore lessen maintenance. There are filters small enough to fit in a bowl, such as corner filters and undergravel filters. If you use one of these filters, it will also require an air pump to operate. Use an air clamp (or air valve) to regulate air flow as Betta fishes do not like too much water movement.

Water. Once all the decorations and equipments are set-up, you can now add water. Fill bowl with bottled drinking water. TAP WATER IS NOT SAFE FOR FISH! If you are going to use tap water, treat it with chlorine neutralizer. If you live in the US your water probably has chloramine, so use a water conditioner that would neutralize both chlorine and chloramine. It would be best to use a water conditioner that will also eliminate ammonia and heavy metals such as copper and zinc, however this is not a requirement. Add a pinch of aquarium salt or rock salt (not iodized salt), it is good for the fish. Let water stand for at least one hour before adding fish to let it warm up (or cool down) to room temperature. Take note that Betta fishes jump! So fill the bowl only at least two inches from the top. Adding a cover to the bowl is advisable, but make sure that air can freely move in and out of the cover as the Betta fish need to breathe surface air. Having a top on your bowl also reduces water loss due to evaporation and reduces the amount of debris that collects in the water from the environment.

Plan Ahead. Set aside water now for next cleaning. Fill a water bottle with tap water, leaving two inches of space from the top. Add a few drops of water conditioner and store covered for three days. This water will not only be of similar temperature but also chlorine free. If you are using bottled drinking water, it may be stored covered in its original container.

Fish Care: Keep a happy and healthy fish!

Learn how to feed the fish, change the water, and clean the bowl thoroughly.
Feeding. Feed the fish once a day, only what it can eat within 2 minutes. DO NOT OVERFEED! More fishes die of overfeeding than of starvation! So feed him carefully. Bettas usually don't like flake food, even the ones labeled for Bettas. My Betta loves Hikari Betta Bio Gold. I feed him 3 pellets of this once a day. I also feed him freeze dried brine shrimp once a week or mosquito larvae whenever I see some in my flower vase. If you feed him live food, make sure to rinse it well and only give it to him if it is alive and clean. You should not feed with live food when you have gravel in your bowl where the worms or larvae may hide if the fish doesn't see it first. Some people prefer to feed their fish twice a day, but frequent feeding means more frequent cleaning! Twice the amount of food means twice as much waste material the fish will excrete. Bettas usually do just fine with once-a-day feeding.

Water Change. As mentioned in the first page, fish excrete waste that would easily accumulate in the water. You don't want your fish bowl to be like a toilet bowl! Therefore, regular water changes is necessary. DO NOT CHANGE ALL OF THE WATER IN THE BOWL! This is stressful to the fish and will cause his immune system to become weak. A typical 1.5 gallon fish bowl requires only about 20% water change twice a week, or once a week if it has filtration. Smaller bowls with no filtration need more frequent water changes. An unfiltered 1/2 gallon bowl would need to have as much as 50% water change everyday.

Cleaning. The bowl needs to be cleaned once a week, or once every two weeks if it has filtration. By this time your fish's particulate wastes and uneaten food have accumulated in the gravel, and these need to be removed before they rot and cause a bacterial bloom. WHEN CLEANING THE BOWL YOU DO NOT NEED TO CHANGE ALL THE WATER. Pour at least 50% of the water from your fish bowl into a clean bucket (you need to use something like a small scoop). Continue pouring up to 80% only if you don't disturb the wastes in the gravel and the water you are scooping still appears crystal clear. Then using a fish net carefully move your fish and live plants from the bowl into the bucket. Next take a clean paper towel and scrub the inside of the fish bowl until it's squeaky-clean. Do not use soap! Rinse the fish bowl, gravel, and decorations well with tap water. Pour the old water with the fish and plants from the bucket back into your fish bowl, and fill your fish bowl 2 inches from the top with bottled drinking water or pretreated tap water.

If you have read George Orwell's famous satirical episode, Animal Firm, you could jolly well have visualized the dog knocking off the bathroom ceiling and replacing it with chicken wire fencing for a little fresh air. Also, the dog being the master would have held you by your neck and locked you up in the bathroom where there is no music, no TV and the place stinks like hell. Think again - training your dog would have been worthwhile.

Think of the weather. As it rains heavily, the temperature drops in the cubbyhole of your bathroom. It also gets dark before the master returns home. The poor little fellow is alarmed by weird traffic snarls, gets hungry and finally becomes nervous due to the long hours in solitary confinement. All it can do is to walk back and forth, back and forth like a caged animal, taunted by the uncalled for punishment inflicted for no fault. In desperation the dog howls which brings further punishment as the angry next-door-neighbor complains. The little fellow is no more considered cute as it seemed at first but becomes an eyesore only to be treated with a cane. Has your eyes opened to let you feel that a little bit of training could have solved all the problems?

Can you recollect your infant days? If you cannot, take a look at other's children's. They usually stick everything within their easy reach into their mouth. In the case of a puppy, the situation is somewhat similar excepting that the puppy not only puts everything in its muzzle but chews it too, because it has a tendency to gnaw as all younger animals tend to do. However, when it has chewed the heck out its master's favorite shoe, the punishment is severe. But the fault is on the part of the master or his lack of training in matters concerning dogs. So, as I hinted earlier, the training should involve both - the dog as well as its master.

Minor training should be imparted to a dog (apart from house breaking) so that it learns how to live side by side with humans. It will surely benefit both. And in any event, a normal dog is intelligent enough to grasp what is asked of it and learns quickly. The only thing relevant in the matter is patience since after all, it is an animal.
